Funky Simplicity Bali family team in their home-atelier — handmade cotton-stretch clothing, shipped from the Netherlands

Our story

Stitched with Soul in Bali

FAIR TRADE & BALI BLESSED

Every Funky Simplicity piece is lovingly cut and sewn by one family in Bali, in a light-filled atelier attached to their home.

With the support of our customers, we built this atelier together in 2020—a place where dignity, joy, and craftsmanship live side by side.

We work in small batches with soft, breathable cotton stretch, and ship from our fulfillment center in the Netherlands so your order reaches you smoothly, worldwide.

The Heart of Funky Simplicity

Meet the founder

"Every piece we create is a labor of love, crafted by skilled artisans in Bali who work in supportive environments with fair pay. Our leggings are designed to be your go-to favorites—timeless, durable, and with a story that you can feel good about every time you wear them.

I believe that no piece of clothing should ever come at the cost of human dignity or our beautiful planet. That’s why at Funky Simplicity, we’re committed to making clothes that make a difference - items that last over a long time.

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Together, we can redefine what fashion stands for—one ethically made, perfectly crafted piece at a time.

With love and gratitude,

Sanne

How it all began

Working together over the 25+ years and still loving every minute of it.

Our Milestones

What started with a one-way ticket to Indonesia and a pair of flares made in Bali for dancing in Koh Phangan, turned into a mission: to create timeless, high-quality apparel that supports fair trade practices, honors local artisans and celebrates the freedom of both the maker and the wearer.

In '92, Sanne set off on a one-way trip to Asia and fell head over heels for the vibrant lifestyle after living in Indonesia, Thailand, India, and Japan. Two years in, Sanne knew Asia was where she belonged. Then came Bali, where she discovered this amazing stretchy cotton. This incredible fabric, paired with Sanne's passion for dance, sparked a 30-year love affair with leggings—and honestly, Sanne never worn anything else since!

1992

In 1992, Sanne bought a one-way ticket to beautiful Asia and discovered a fabric that would change everything. This wasn’t just any cotton—it was something special. Inspired, she used it to create her first pair of leggings for a dance festival.

The vibrant fabric and unique prints quickly caught the attention of her friends, who fell in love with them too. It didn't take long before, Sanne found herself making leggings for others, and a new journey began.

2006

In 2006, the Funky Simplicity brand was officially born.

2020

In 2020, we built our very own studio and home for our lovely head-tailor and his family. Together they create each piece, comfortably at home, creating their own hours as they wish.

Funky Simplicity's new studio was inaugurated with a traditional Balinese Melaspas ceremony. This sacred ritual, performed by local Hindus, is a cleansing and purification process for newly completed or reoccupied buildings, such as homes, offices, shops, or stables.

The term "melaspas" comes from the Balinese words "MLAs," meaning "to divide," and "Pas," meaning "to fit together." It reflects the belief that buildings are composed of two key elements—wood and stone. For Balinese Hindus, the Melaspas ceremony is a deeply rooted tradition, essential for blessing and sanctifying new spaces.

Today

We (hopefully) get to celebrate and make your order.

Every piece of clothing is still made at the same family-run studio in Bali. Fabrics are still hand-printed, and garments are sewn by Ketut Mertha and his family, under excellent working conditions, ensuring fair wages for all workers.

Blessed new beginnings
